How To Measure Flour Correctly Without A Scale
Have you ever made a bread or cake recipe that promised to be moist and tender but turned out to be dry and dense? This results most times from the use of more flour than required, (other factors can also be the number of eggs, quantity of butter, overmixing etc) but we're concentrating on flour today. The best option to get the accurate measurements for your baked goods is to use weighing balance or scale.
Can You Measure Flour Without Scales?
Of course you can!, simply get your measuring cups, spoons and a knife or any straight edged utensil and use the Spoon and Level Method of measuring to get the right quantity of flour needed with little or zero difference from weighed flour.
Why The Spoon And Level Method Of Measuring?
When you scoop the flour with your measuring cup directly from the container (The Dip and Sweep Method), more flour tend to become packed inside the cup and this makes you end up with way too much flour in your recipe than required and you’re less likely to get the best results.
How To Measure Flour Without A Scale:
- To spoon and level the flour, you’ll start by fluffing the flour a little with a spoon to aerate the flour. This helps to break down any clumps the flour must have formed while packed in the container.
- Then you’ll spoon the flour into the measuring cup. I normally use a cooking spoon for this because it is faster, but any type of spoon is fine.
- Fill the measuring cup all the way to the top and let the flour flow over a little. Then, you’ll use the back of a knife or any straight edge object to level the top off.
